Escape the routine of only scrolling through shows available in English and tune into the other side of Netflix.
Recently, Netflix negotiated to release the top shows from around the world. Regardless of your foreign language skills, I encourage you to tun on the subtitles and explore.
Reading between the subtitles consists of two endeavors. First, I consider the role of gender across cultures. In what ways are US shows similar or different from other countries?
Second, I seek to better understand the political or cultural dynamics from the plot. Whether it be a show about a South Korean businesswoman who finds herself stranded in North Korea, or a series about age gaps in relationships in China, I connect with articles and current discussions in each country to highlight the ways in which the show speaks to current affairs and social debates.
